Be Author Not Just Translator!

Grand Launch

Undoubtedly, I can say that if we look for the creativity in the translation, we should expand in writing. The translators should find a way or another to be authors and editors. The matter is not only based on hoppy or just a fun for the translator to be a writer or author, but the situation itself neccesates this action.

To be a good translator, you should be creative and seriously thinking out of the box. Sticking to the text, creates a relationship resembles to much extent the relationship between enemies. Becuase the translator finds himself/herself entirely restricted to the text as if he/she were a prisoner of this text. But the question that dictates itself here, when the translator transfers into writing while translating! In fact, this question leads to another question, where the translates writes his/her own impacts, comments, additions and much more corrections in some cases!

In order to answer these questions, we are in need to understand that the profession of translator is co-related with enlightenment, information conveyor and of course in the light of ethics and morals. Let’s start answering the first question, when the transator be an author. While the translator handling translation work, he/ she might be encountered with some historical facts; crimes, battles, crisis, accidents, and some other signifcant incidents that have negatively or positively changed the stream of life! Or left impacts in a way or another on some regions, countries, or even the world.

The translator can not in this case translate the name or event and then go ahead with the other part of the text. Instead, the translator should give the right explanation and comment on these events in details. The translator in this case will be the belt-conveyor of the knowledge to the reader or the addressee! For instance, if said Stalkholm Syndrome! and he translated as متلازمة ستوكهولم this shall give nothing to the reader! In this case, the translator should enhance the reader with the historical background of this accident which aftermath became as a well known syndrome in the history of accidents asnd crimes.

Another example, the translator cannot just mention for instance, the word gluten as a prison and go away. Gluten should be explained and interpreted in details and how it was the advancement of the French revolution and it is closely related to a period of hardships and agonies. Moreover, it has been referred in most literary writings, especially in France in England. One of the prominent writings of Charles Dickens has mentioned thoroughly about this period in his well-known story; “A Tale of Two Cities”. Again, for the influencing characters and persons, the translator should shed the light on these persons highlighting their role and influencing impacts.

Moreover, while the translator translates legal terms or financial terms, he/she cannot translate the term as is, but finding out the function of this term in the financial service industry, and when it can be used. Furthermore, as regards the legal terms, some are coined and orginated from the common law jurisdiction, while others have been orginated from the civil law jurisdiction. Therefore, the translator role is to define and identify the tems with its background and relevance. In chemicals, one of the most important processes and interactions are related to some factors, we might call them as catalysts! Again, the translator is required to underpin these catalysts and their role in triggering the chemical interactions.

Again, while tghe translator translates the proverbs, sayings and quotations, he may and may not find the equivalent the target language. What about if the translator did not find the equivalent in the target language?! In this case, the translator starts his/her writing in order to explain what is the meaning of the proverb or saying. Accordingly, this explanation should be in an eloquent language simply understood to the reader of the target language. For instance; in Arabic language if somebody had a bath, or dresses his/her hair, we say to him نعيما this word is not existed in the English language, therefore, the translator shoud explain and interprete this phrase into the target to enable the reader to understand the culture of the source language.

In Arabic and Islamic family law, there is a divorcing initiated by the wife not by the husband as usual. This type of divorcing is called in Arabic الخلع , the translator is required to explain what is the meaning of this type of divorcing. In this case, it means the wife-initiated divoring, i shall not be enough phrase, but it needs more explanation and interpretation.

Translation itself is an art of conveying cultures between different civilizations and nations. It is the main profession and mission of the translator is to be bold and confident enough in playing this role. When the translator takes such initiative, he/she renders great services to the peoples, he/she opens windows and outlets in front of the peoples of all countries to see others and then understand each other! When the translator adopts this conception, she/he will be as eye-glasses maker, who can manufactures lenses to people to wear to see each other in the right way! At that time, understanding and tolerance will be the prevaling culture and prevailing rules.

In order to answer the second question; where the translator can write her/his comments, additions, and corrections? I think the translator might do * this sign in the footnotes, and by the way, the footnotes is the best place for the translator to submit his/her contributions and writings. With this sign, it is recommended to add that this by the translator, and then narrates, writes, adds or whtever comments shall be. At last, while I am recommending to be an author or writer, you should be fair enough, pay much more attention to the integrity and the truth.

Because everybody looks for the truth, though if he/she isn’t happy with!
